DIY Children's Doctor Costume for kids Halloween costume or dress ups. Super easy and perfect for a last minute costume!

This was made as a Halloween costume, but doctor's coat and scrubs could easily be a Christmas or birthday gift…or just something fun to make for a fun dress up surprise! How to make a cute children's doctor costume. Scrubs and doctor coat! Making the World Cuter

My baby Oliver loved Doc McStuffins, and carried this doctor bag around with him everywhere! He was so excited to dress up as a doctor for Halloween. He was so excited to have his own doctor's coat and then of course scrubs just like his daddy! It's time to make a children's doctor costume.

I went out and bought fabric to make the coat, but as I sat down to draw out a pattern, I looked over and saw my husband's closet full of white dress shirts, he couldn't possibly need all of them right? If your husband also has extra shirts laying around ask which one you can have and go to work! Otherwise, a stop at a thrift store should get you an inexpensive white shirt.

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Men's white dress shirt you could certainly buy one, but try to get one for free from your husband's closet or cheap from a thrift store!
  • Doctor Kit Toy
  • Cotton Fabric for scrubs or purchase a pair of kids scrubs already made.
  • Sewing machine
  • Straight pins
  • Fabric Scissors

How to Make a Children's Doctor Coat out of a Man's Dress Shirt

How to make a Children's Doctor Costume | Lab Coat out of a man's dress shirt. Making the World Cuter

  1. Start with a man's dress shirt, cut the sleeves off. Save sleeves.
  2. Use your child's shirt as a guide, I used a size 6 dress shirt as a guide, even though this is for my 3 year old at the time. I wanted it to be roomy enough that he could wear it easily over his clothes. You can use one your child's actual size, just make it a couple inches bigger all around.
  3. Use pins to mark the sides, using the child's shirt as a guide, stop at the sleeve.
  4. Cut into the shirt at the sleeves to make the shoulders the right size.
  5. Sew up the sides where you pinned. Stop at the arm holes. Cut off excess fabric.

6. With shirt still inside out, pin sleeves to holes, you will have excess, just leave it and then sew around the sleeve.
7. While shirt still inside out, in from under arm and straight across. Sew and cut off excess.
8. The shirt is still inside out, cut sleeves about 2 inches longer than you need them, fold them under to make a cuff. Press and sew the sides together. I sewed both sides to make it a little more sturdy.
9. Cut off the bottom of the shirt. Save it. Fold bottom up to make a hem, press and sew. Turn shirt right side out.
10. Using a piece from the bottom, cut a square and make an optional pocket or two on the bottom part of your coat.

You're all done with the coat!

Children's Scrubs

Easy to Sew Scrubs for Kids Making the World Cuter

For the scrubs, I didn't take step by step photos because I made them at night. They couldn't be easier unless….you went out and bought them. First, make the pants the same way  these pajama pants are made, and for the top  just use one of your kid's shirts as a pattern and cut two pieces, one with a v-neck and sewed them together. Just make sure to make the neck is big enough that it can easily fit over your child's head. You don't need to do any finishing touches on the neck or sleeves, because they will be under the coat, and I just didn't think it needed to be that professional, but you certainly could! 🙂 Finally, finish the bottom by just folding it under and sewing it. Done!

And now if you'll indulge me…I have to post a bunch of pics of my Baby McDreamy in his Doc duds!
